Asbestos and Strip Out: What Clients Need to Know

Asbestos is the single biggest risk on most pre-2000 strip out projects. The good news is that the rules are well understood and the workflow is well established.
Surveys
Before any intrusive work, a refurbishment and demolition (R&D) asbestos survey must be carried out by a competent surveyor. The report drives the strip out method, the programme and the price.
Removal
Licensed asbestos removal must be carried out by an HSE-licensed contractor, with notifications submitted in advance. Non-licensed work still requires trained operatives, RPE and proper waste handling.
On-site discoveries
If suspected ACMs are uncovered mid-strip, work in that area stops immediately, the material is sampled, and the programme is adjusted. A mature contractor will have this protocol written into their method statement.
