Choosing a Strip Out Contractor in the UK
What to look for when shortlisting a strip out and demolition contractor — accreditations, insurance, method, and the questions to ask at tender stage.
The cheapest tender is rarely the cheapest job. Strip out works sit on the critical path of nearly every refurbishment, so the contractor you appoint affects every trade that follows.
Accreditations that matter
Look for CHAS, Constructionline, SafeContractor or equivalent. Operatives should hold CCDO or CSCS cards appropriate to the work. For demolition scopes, NFDC membership is a strong signal.
Method and programme
A credible contractor will issue a clear method statement, risk assessment and programme before you sign. If those documents are vague, the job will be too.
Insurance
Public liability of at least £10m is standard for commercial strip out. Confirm cover is in place and current before site set up.
